Value Added Tax (VAT)

VAT is charged at a standard rate of 15% on the supply of goods and services by registered vendors. Any vendor whose taxable supplies exceed R1 million per annum is required to register for VAT. Vendors with taxable supplies exceeding R50,000 but less than R1 million per annum may apply for voluntary VAT registration. Some goods and services may be zero-rated or exempt from VAT.

To register for VAT, the following documents and information are required:

  • Close Corporation or Company registration documents

  • Contact details of the company and its members/directors

  • Description of the business and its activities

  • Proof of Income Tax registration for the company

  • SARS Power of Attorney (sent to you via email after order placement)

  • Certified clear ID copies of all members/directors

  • Original bank letter confirming the business bank account (must indicate when the account was opened, stamped and not older than 1 month)

  • Three months of stamped bank statements showing sales of at least R50,000

  • Invoices issued to clients totaling at least R50,000

  • Proof of business address (not older than one month)

  • Proof of residential address for all members/directors (not older than one month)

Important: SARS may conduct a site inspection to verify that the business is operational and to confirm its trading activities.

The VAT registration process typically takes 2–5 business days, though delays may occur depending on SARS workload.

If a site inspection is required, the overall process may take 21–40 business days.
